Abstract

Background: Health communication plays a pivotal role in tuberculosis (TB) prevention, especially in low-incidence (cold spot) areas. Identifying trusted information sources can inform more targeted and impactful interventions. This study aimed to describe sources of TB information obtained and perceived as effective, stratified by age, sex, and education. Method: A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted from February to April 2025 in six urban villages across four subdistricts of Jambi Municipality. Using multi-stage random sampling, 430 residents aged ≥18 years were interviewed face-to-face with a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests to examine differences in information sources by demographic variables. Result: Of the respondents (mean age 45.5±13.96 years; 70.7% female), 79.3% reported having heard of TB. The most common sources of TB information were personal networks (50.1%), health workers (29.9%), and teachers (21.1%). Younger adults (18–34 years) preferred digital platforms including Instagram (14.3%) and TikTok (10.7%), whereas older adults (≥55 years) relied more on health workers. Perceived effectiveness varied: health workers (78.6%), personal networks (44.4%), and television (41.9%) were rated highest. These patterns suggest that communication strategies should be tailored to demographic preferences. The prominence of health workers among older and less educated groups reflects trust in traditional sources, while digital media appeal to younger and more educated individuals. A dual-channel approach may enhance TB awareness in cold spot areas. Conclusion: A combination of health worker outreach and targeted digital campaigns may be effective in engaging younger and educated audiences, while community-based channels remain essential for older populations.
