Abstract

Background: Indonesia is an agricultural country that produces a wide range of food sources; however, health problems, particularly malnutrition in toddlers, remain relatively high, including stunted growth. Stunting remains a significant public health problem in Indonesia, including in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. Maternal health conditions during pregnancy play a crucial role in fetal growth and may increase the risk of low birth weight (LBW), which subsequently contributes to stunting. Objective: This study aimed to analyse maternal factors during pregnancy associated with the incidence of low birth weight among stunted children in Banyuwangi Regency. Method: A quantitative retrospective study was conducted using secondary data from the Banyuwangi District Health Office in 2022. The study included 4,371 stunted children aged 24–59 months from 45 community health centres. The analysed maternal variables were antenatal care (ANC) completeness, maternal anaemia, and chronic energy deficiency (CED) during pregnancy. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression. Result: Inadequate ANC, maternal anaemia, and CED during pregnancy were significantly associated with the incidence of LBW among stunted children (p < 0.001). Mothers with CED had the highest risk of delivering LBW infants (OR = 4.076; 95% CI: 3.160–5.257). Conclusion: Maternal health status during pregnancy significantly influences birth outcomes. Strengthening ANC services, improving maternal nutritional status, and enhancing family-based support are essential strategies to prevent LBW and reduce the risk of stunting.
