Background
‘What makes man human is his ability to speak.’ This was initiated by Aristotle, a prominent Greek philosopher, when he expressed his ideas regarding the fundamental differences between humans and animals. Language is an important ability to be possessed and studied by humans so that humans become figures who are able to improve their intellect as well as their humanity. Language has undergone rapid development and is no longer limited to traditional and classical theories, but has evolved in the midst of modernization and globalization that has occurred in society.
Entering the era of Society 5.0, which is an era where all technology becomes part of humans themselves, society experiences developments and changes in aspects of their lives. The internet, technology, cyber, and artificial intelligence are familiar and close things so that they indirectly affect the fundamental aspect of human daily life, namely language.
Language, including linguistic aspects, is a part that is still not studied in depth when the discussion of Society 5.0 is raised. In fact, in this era, the role and evolution of language is felt strongly, especially language as a lingual unit in communication, language in teaching, and as a culture. This can be seen in the language that is beginning to develop in digital platforms and virtual communities, the emergence of online and virtual language learning in language applications, the use of artificial intelligence in translation and language learning, to the implications of new cultures that have been formed due to the rapid flow of digital interaction globally.
As the country with the second largest language wealth in the world, Indonesia is one of the countries that has experienced a significant impact due to language development in the midst of the Society 5.0 current. The increasingly developing Indonesian Language is accompanied by mixing with foreign languages, the preservation of regional languages in the midst of the peak of globalization and digitalization, and foreign cultures that are increasingly easily accepted and acculturated with local cultures are phenomena that should be explored by national and international researchers.
These new phenomena and developments should be studied in scientific forums and discussions in order to find new points to develop and take advantage of the Society 5.0 moment in order to support the positive impacts caused and reduce negative impacts on society, especially the people of Indonesia. Therefore, as part of the academic community, Student Association of The Linguistics Masters Program (HIMA LINGUA), Airlangga University intends to hold an Event of International Conference in Language, Literature, and Culture (ELITE) with the theme Language in Society 5.0 to accommodate the study of the forum between researchers. This activity is an annual activity that has been carried out twice before. Therefore, this program was initiated to maintain and develop the program. In addition, this program is expected to be a forum for exploring the future of language and culture in the midst of the development of the digital world.
